About this rug

Each of the eighteen large guls on this rug is split into quarters, two black and two red, set diagonally so the guls look chequered, with a stepped diamond at every centre. They stand three across and six down on a bright red field, and small branching tree shapes fill the channels between them.

A row of red stepped motifs runs across each end of the border, among bands of small diamonds, and ivory fringe finishes both ends. The pile is wool, hand-knotted in Afghanistan. A room of roughly 3.5 × 2.6 m gives its 293 × 197 cm an even surround. Look through our Afghan akche rugs to compare gul styles.
