Rugs of Persia's rugs are mostly one of a kind, so sizes vary: a rug may measure 155 × 105 cm rather than a round 160 × 120 cm. Tell us what the rug is for and we'll show the rugs that fit, odd sizes included.

How to choose the right rug size

Measure the room or the furniture the rug will sit under, then use the rules below. All sizes are in centimetres, as on our product pages. If you're between two sizes, the larger rug usually makes a room look bigger and calmer.

Lounge or living room

Leave 30–60 cm of floor showing around the rug, so in a 5 × 4 m lounge look for a rug of roughly 380–440 × 280–340 cm. In a smaller room, let at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug so the seating feels connected; a 230 × 160 cm or 300 × 200 cm rug works in most South African lounges.

Dining room

Chairs need to stay on the rug when they are pulled out, so add 60–90 cm on every side of the table: a 180 × 90 cm six-seater table needs a rug of about 300–360 × 210–270 cm, such as 350 × 250 cm.

Bedroom

Place the rug sideways under the lower two-thirds of the bed, with 40–60 cm showing on each side.

Hallway runners

Choose a runner 20–150 cm shorter than the passage so it stops clear of doorways, and 20–50 cm narrower so 10–25 cm of floor shows on each side. A 110 cm-wide passage suits a runner 60–90 cm wide; long passages may need one of our 6 m, 8 m or 10 m runners. Browse runners.

Round rugs

Under a round table, add 50–75 cm all round: a 100 cm table suits a rug of about 200–250 cm across. In an entrance or reading corner, a 150–200 cm round rug softens a square room. Browse round rugs.

Rug size questions

What size rug do I need for my lounge?

Measure the room and subtract 60–120 cm from both its length and its width, so the rug leaves 30–60 cm of floor showing on each side. If that is too big for your budget, choose a rug that fits under at least the front legs of your seating.

Why are your rug sizes not standard?

Handmade rugs are woven to the loom, not cut to a template, so two "300 × 200 cm" rugs can differ by a few centimetres. Every listing shows the measured size; the Size Finder matches within the tolerance you choose.

Should a rug go under the sofa?

Ideally the front legs sit on the rug. A rug floating in front of the sofa only works when it is at least as wide as the sofa.

How do I measure for a runner?

Measure the passage length and width, then subtract 20–150 cm from the length and 20–50 cm from the width. Check door swings: a runner should stop clear of doors that open into the passage.
