About this rug

Twenty-four square compartments, four across and six down, give this Bakhtiari-pattern rug a tiled garden layout. Leafy sprigs on a sand ground alternate with arched panels holding vases of flowers, some on charcoal and others in sage green or soft terracotta, so the grid reads as a gentle chequerboard of light and dark. A series of narrow borders follows, filled with small crosses, links and leaf shapes in sage, navy and maroon, and both ends finish in a short fringe.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from natural wool and measuring 200 × 151 cm, it can lie in front of a two- or three-seater sofa or anchor a reading corner, within a room of around 2.6 × 2.1 m. Kazak and Gabbeh designs from the same country are among our Afghan rugs.
