About this rug

Ten large octagons, in two columns of five, stand out in near-black against a bright red field. Each is divided into quarters around a stepped cross, with small hooked shapes in every quarter, and branching dark motifs grow in the spaces between them. The wide border repeats that contrast: a dark net covers it, leaving rows of red ovals and diamonds showing through, while a band of small dark rosettes runs round the outside.

Afghan hands knotted its natural wool pile. With the coffee table standing on it, the 246 × 170 cm rug fills the floor before a three-seat couch in a lounge near 3.1 × 2.3 m. Big-gul designs like this one are grouped under akche wool rugs.
