About this rug

Ninety small dark guls, six across and fifteen down, line up across the bright red field of this Bokhara akche, each holding an ivory hooked cross. Dark red stepped crosses fill the gaps between them, with tiny ivory zigzags. The field covers a little over half the width; the rest is a deep maroon surround of several bands, scattered with small diamonds and leaf flecks, so the centre glows against a darker frame.

In Afghanistan its natural wool was tied by hand and trimmed to about 8 mm, and its 290 × 199 cm spreads across a living area of 3.5 × 2.6 m with a margin of bare floor all round. Similar designs sit in our Bokhara rug collection.
