About this rug

Down the centre of this 3 m runner, seven large octagons stand in a single column, each divided into quarters and filled with small crosses: the elephant-foot gul that gives the design its name. Small hooked motifs float in the red ground between them. A navy lattice of crossing diagonals runs around the border, and the short end is fringed in white.

This runner was made in Afghanistan in natural wool and is 82 cm across, so a hallway of 1 m to 1.2 m gives it a comfortable margin; a long landing works too. Rugs with large guls are grouped in the Afghan akche range.
