About this rug

Forty-five squares, five across and nine down, make up the field of this sumak. Most are navy with a red eight-pointed star, and scattered among them in a staggered pattern are ivory-framed squares with zigzag edges and navy or red stars, all set on a deep burgundy ground. The inner border is an ivory band of alternating navy and red stepped crosses, followed by a navy band of red stars and ivory sawtooth lines, then a red edge.

Afghan weavers made it by hand in 100% natural wool. Across the foot of a queen bed it reaches about 55 cm past each side, and a lounge near 3.25 × 2.65 m frames it with a margin of floor. Other grid and panel designs are in our kilim and sumak collection.
