About this rug

Twenty-four large panels, four across and six down, sit on a rust-red ground. Each has a frame of tiny star rosettes in red, navy and grey on cream, and a centre block that is either navy with an orange diamond or cream with a dark brown one, the two kinds taking turns across each row. Small navy diamonds mark the points where the panels meet. The border is cream, divided into tall cells by red and navy bars between navy guard stripes, with a red outer band of ivory hooks.

Made by hand in Afghanistan, it is all natural wool. It fits a lounge seating area of about 3.1 × 2.6 m, with chairs drawn up around its edges. Our kilim rugs cover more sumak designs in other colours.
