About this rug

Laid out in compartments, this small Mamluk-design rug has a navy field with a lobed ivory medallion at its heart, outlined in rust red and framed by a pale green star. Above and below it sit two large octagons in ivory and pale blue with dark centres, and four ivory squares with rust rosettes fill the sides. The broad cream border is covered in fine red-brown vine tracery.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan, it is hand-spun wool and ends in a braided fringe with small coloured tips. Being only 150 × 105 cm, it fits beside a bed, inside an entrance hall or under a reading chair. More small pieces are in the chobi collection.
