About this rug
Twelve square panels, three across and four down, divide the field of this hand-woven somak like tiles. Each holds a central diamond, either burgundy on ivory or mustard checks on navy, alternating in a chequerboard, and the rust-red ground around it is filled with small stars and crosses. A navy band, a wide ivory border of stepped boxes and a navy stripe of zigzags lead out to a rust edge with a wave scroll, all woven flat in natural wool in Afghanistan. Almost square at 190 × 160 cm, the panelled design suits a round or square coffee table, or a lounge corner of around 2.5 × 2.2 m, and it is one of the flatweaves among our kilim and kelim rugs.
