About this rug

The outer border is what sets this akche apart: a lattice of dark diamonds, each lit by a small bright pink-red centre, so the edge looks almost chequered. Inside it, bands of small leaf flecks lead to a bright red field holding 75 guls in five columns of fifteen. Each gul is a dark rounded octagon with ivory hooks, and larger dark stepped diamonds alternate with them in offset rows.

This rug was hand-knotted in Afghanistan using natural wool, with 80 knots in every square inch and an ivory fringe at both ends, and it suits a lounge measuring around 3.4 × 2.6 m. See the rest of our akche woollen rugs.
