About this rug

Fewer, larger guls give this akche a bolder rhythm: 60 of them, five across and twelve down, each a dark oval with gold-ivory hooks inside its own scalloped red halo. Chains of dark stepped diamonds run between the columns, and the edge of the bright red field is notched rather than straight. A broad deep maroon surround, sprinkled with tiny four-dot ivory diamonds and leaf shapes, takes up close to half the width.

Made in Afghanistan, it holds 80 hand-tied knots in each square inch of its natural wool pile, and a main bedroom or a lounge around 3.5 × 2.5 m gives the large guls room to read. More are in our Afghan akche collection.
