About this rug
Only 50 guls are spread over the bright red ground of this akche, five across and ten down, spaced widely enough for plenty of red to show between them. Each dark oval holds a large ivory hooked cross, and dark eight-pointed stars with dotted centres fill the gaps. The frame is built from many narrow concentric bands: rows of tiny ivory dots, a running wave and a bright red sawtooth.
Natural wool, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, gives the rug a pile close to 8 mm, with an ivory fringe at the ends, and a family room of 3.5 × 2.6 m or larger takes it comfortably. Compare our woollen akche rugs.
