340 × 250cm Persian Bijar Hand-Knotted Vintage Rug

This is a fine Persian Bijar (Bidjar) hand-knotted rug from western Iran, measuring 340 × 250 cm. Bijar rugs are renowned for their exceptional density and strength and are often referred to as the “iron rugs of Persia.” This piece clearly shows that character, with a compact, tightly packed pile and a firm handle that gives the rug a solid, substantial feel. Unlike Hamadan rugs, which tend to be looser in structure, this rug is dense and highly durable.

The design features a classic Herati (mahi) field in a warm brick-red tone, filled with small repeating floral motifs that create depth and visual movement. A layered diamond medallion anchors the center, executed in ivory, navy, and muted green, offering contrast while staying balanced and refined. The wide border is richly detailed with geometric and floral elements typical of high-quality Bijar weaving.

The colour palette is traditional and mature, dominated by brick red and rust, complemented by ivory, navy blue, sage green, soft teal, and subtle hints of pink. These tones have a natural, slightly softened appearance that reflects age and quality rather than modern production.

Age and condition

This rug is vintage, not antique, and likely dates from the 1960s to early 1980s. The fineness of the knots, the dense construction, and the gently mellowed colours give it an antique look, but its age places it firmly in the vintage category. Bijar rugs are known to age slowly, which is why this piece remains strong and well-defined.

Condition is very good overall. There is minor localized wear limited to the area shown in your third image, with the rest of the pile remaining even, stable, and structurally sound. No major repairs or weaknesses are present.
