About this rug

Six to a column, in three columns, eighteen large octagonal guls take up most of the mellow brick-red field, and they are dark: brown-black, with red detail. At the centre of each gul sits a small diamond worked as a fine lattice, and the quarters around it hold clover-like sprigs. Narrow red channels between the columns are dotted with small branching motifs.

Bands of stepped triangles and small leaves make up the border, with a short ivory fringe at each end. Its dark guls and red channels were knotted by hand in natural wool in Afghanistan, at roughly 80 knots per square inch. A bedroom or lounge near 3.45 × 2.55 m is about right for its 286 × 194 cm.
