About this rug

Rows of small rings fill the centre of every gul on this red akche, gathered inside a square that is crossed by an X. There are eight of these large guls, two side by side and four deep, with dark burgundy and near-black quarters, and tall branching motifs like little trees between them. The border is a bold criss-cross of dark lines enclosing red diamonds, edged inside and out by bands of dark curled leaves.

Its 194 × 155 cm sits well in an entrance hall, or under a low table in a sitting room of at least 2.5 × 2.2 m. The rug is Afghan-made, hand-knotted throughout in natural wool, and it is listed in the Afghan akche category.
