About this rug

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from natural wool, this filpai from our Afghan akche rugs has eight large octagonal guls on its red field, two across and four down. Each is quartered in olive green and saffron gold around a red heart with a small cross, and dark hooked diamonds line the centre between them. The olive-gold main border is a lattice of stepped red diamonds, edged inside by a dark band of small red lozenges, with cream fringes at both ends. A 200 × 150 cm piece like this can anchor a seating area that needs about 2.6 × 2.1 m of floor, or lie crosswise under the lower part of a double bed with roughly 30 cm of the red and olive border showing on each side.
