About this rug

Twelve rows of small dark guls, five to a row, fill the deep red field of this Bokhara, sixty in all. Each octagon is a dark wine colour with tiny ivory hooks at its heart, and between them sit cross-shaped motifs flecked with ivory zigzags. The frame is built from several wine-dark bands; the broadest is nearly plain apart from scattered ivory dots, which lets the busy centre stand out.

At 244 × 170 cm, this Bokhara rug can anchor a lounge seating group in a room close to 3 × 2.3 m, with the sofa and chairs resting their front feet on it; every knot of its natural wool pile was tied by hand in Afghanistan.
