About this rug

The scarlet field of this akche is bright, and its eighteen large guls stand out in black outline, three across and six down. Each gul is quartered by a cross, with a small red panel at its centre and little clover shapes in the quarters, and hooked lozenges stand in the red spaces between the columns.

The border is built from many narrow bands: small sawtooth triangles, a band of wavy lines and dark bands scattered with tiny leaves. Afghanistan is its origin, and it was hand-knotted in wool. Laid across a queen bed, it leaves roughly 70 cm of rug on each side. Our Afghan akche rugs include other large-gul layouts.
