About this rug

Mustard gold leads the palette of this sumak: thirty gold squares stand in five columns on a brick-red field, and they come in two kinds. Some are dotted all over with a black diamond at the centre; others form a chequer of small brown, olive and gold octagons. Tiny gold flowers made of six dots sit in the gaps between them. The border alternates broad black bands with gold ones, one patterned with small red and brown arches, before a narrow red edge.

Made by hand in Afghanistan from pure natural wool, the rug has a strong black-and-gold frame that would define a study or a seating area, and 272 × 203 cm is enough to sit crossways under a queen bed. More sumak layouts are among our kilim rugs.
