About this rug

Sage-green and gold palmettes, sickle leaves and long scrolling stems are mirrored across a wine-red field, meeting at a small sand-coloured knot in the middle rather than a medallion. The drawing is open, so plenty of red shows between the motifs. The main border is a warm gold with sage arabesques and red palmettes, followed by a sand guard dotted with small red flowers and a narrow red edge.

Vegetable dyes give the hand-spun wool its mellow red and gold; Afghan weavers knotted the half-inch pile by hand. Spread over 254 × 181 cm, this fine chobi rug sits comfortably under a table for four or in a living area near 3.1 × 2.4 m.
