Description
Afghan Baluch rugs are hand-knotted tribal weavings made by Baluch tribes in western Afghanistan, admired for their earthy tones, durability, and cultural authenticity. Typically woven with a soft wool pile on a wool or cotton foundation, they feature motifs such as prayer niches, geometric medallions, tree of life patterns, and stylized florals. Their color palette is dominated by deep browns, rich reds, dark blues, and ivory accents, traditionally achieved with natural dyes. Often made in smaller formats, Afghan Baluch rugs serve beautifully as prayer rugs, accent pieces, or collector’s items. Each piece reflects the nomadic heritage of its weaver, with subtle irregularities and a warm, time-worn charm that makes them unique and highly sought after.

About this rug
A pale sand field, rather than the more familiar red, carries the Bokhara pattern on this Baluch rug. Eight red octagonal guls, two by four, are linked by fine dark lines into an open grid, and small navy diamonds with red and green centres sit between them along the middle. The border is cream as well, laid out as a row of tiles that each hold a radiating star in red or dark green.
Hand-knotted in wool to a pile height near 13 mm, this 195 × 100 cm piece lightens a dim passage, a bedside or a small entrance, and suits a floor of roughly 2.6 × 1.6 m. Red-ground versions of this gul layout are among our Bokhara rugs.
