About this rug

Eight large octagonal guls, two across and four down, dominate the raspberry-red field of this akche. Each is outlined and quartered in dark indigo, with a small diamond at its centre and hooked shapes in every quarter, and stick-like hooked figures stand in the red between them. The borders step out through a chain of small diamonds, a row of red triangles and a broad lattice of crossing diagonals.

This rug comes from Afghanistan, its natural wool pile standing about 8 mm tall and white fringing trimming each end; the 200 × 150 cm size fits in front of a three-seater sofa, beside a double bed or in a study. More are in the Afghan akche range.
