About this rug

Six navy medallions, two across and three down, stand out on the bright crimson field of this Turkmen rug. Each is a stepped, star-like shape with rust-orange petals around a pink centre, and a navy framework of hooked lines and brackets links them, dotted with small rust flowers. The border is a row of arched compartments in navy and rust, holding crosses and feather-like leaves in turn, and a navy and white zigzag edges the long sides.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan at a count of 80 knots per square inch, it has a natural wool pile some 8 mm deep; a study, a bedroom or the space before a sofa all suit its 200 × 159 cm. It sits among our Turkmen rugs.
